ELCI Engagement with the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) Conference Of Parties |
| |
In lead up to the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johanesburg, South Africa in 2002, three international NGO network organization formed the initial alliance to support the (SDIN) . These initial organizations were; the Northern Alliance for Sustainability (ANPED); Environment Liaison Center International (ELCI) and the Third World Network (TWN).
The Alliance seeks means of developing, in an open and transparent manner, a flexible and responsive governance structure that reflects the emerging needs of caucus coordinators and members of Civil Society wishing to have effective input into sustainable development policy dialogues and implementation.
The Sustainable Development Issues Network (SDIN) is a collaborative effort among Civil Society networks and nongovernmental issue caucuses aiming to improve communication among NGO's engaging in the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development
NGO's are one of the officially recognized "Major Groups" representing large sectors of Civil Society critical to the success of sustainable development. But all Major Groups are accredited to participate in the United Nations Economic and Social Commission meetings and subsidairy bodies through the NGO door, which up until now is the only means by which non governmental agencies can participate at the United Nations.
As such, the NGO community has a large responsibilty to ensure that the door remains open to Civil Society, and effective participation is fostered and facilitated in UN-ECOSOC meetings |
|
The Issues Network evolved out of discussions among NGO issue caucuses and major groups seeking methods and vehicles to increase thier effectiveness in contributing to the global dialogue on sustainable development policy at the UN Commission on Sustainable Development.
The Issues Network is not meant to compete with or replace the networking and organizing efforts of other bodies, but instead aims to assist and promote the efforts of Civil Society networks working on sustainable development issues. In this sense, SDIN is not another "network" per se but hopefully a usefull tool of NGO networks. |
